SPOTLIGHT: Shawn Main
What is your role within the company?
I’m the Pipeline Isolation & Technology Specialist
What do you like most about working for KCI?
We are quite a small team so we are big on teamwork here. It’s a real muck in attitude. It means the every day is different, R&D testing one day, then manufacturing, engineering, marketing the next!
What first attracted you to your area of expertise?
I’d love to give a grand story about how I got into pipelines but the reality is I fell into it. I needed a change of job and a client of mine suggested going to work with them in pipeline pre-comm, 26 years later here I am!
What are the values that drive you?
I’ve always worked in service companies so delivering to the client’s satisfaction has always been hugely important to me.
As is teamwork, if you have a strong sense of teamwork delivering for your client is easy. As I said earlier, teamwork is central here at KCI and it’s a real strength in the organisation.
What is a key challenge that your customers face that you want to solve?
The key challenge is ageing infrastructure, in particular failing isolation valves. It’s key to any repair and maintenance, as such, failure to gain isolations can cost the oil & gas industry so much.
While that’s our main focus in the pipeline side, we always want to hear from our clients, we want to hear about all their issues, we are here to engineer solutions for them.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
WOW that’s a hard one. I think the variety of the work.
We are a small team so we get involved in all aspects of a project. At KCI you are hands on at every step of the journey, from R&D to successfully executing the work scope for the client. That’s the most exciting part of the job.
Outside of work, what are you passionate about?
Family. My wife Sarah, our two daughters, Anna & Caitlin, and Charlie the dog. Spending time with them is number 1, and then football.
What’s something about you that not a lot of people know?
I once scored two goals at Pittodrie Stadium, the home of Aberdeen FC. It was in a 7 a side game for my work team against a team of solicitors (but we don’t need to mention that bit do we?)
What do you get up to on the weekends?
Football. I love football although only watching these days.
I have a season ticket for Cove Rangers who are my local team, but my real passion is Spanish football, I’ll bore anyone who is willing to listen to me ramble on about Spanish football.
Going to Barcelona to visit friends and watch my team Espanyol is what I like to do at weekends, unfortunately that isn’t possible every weekend.
