Why might Gate Valve Isolations be required?
Damaged Seats or Gate
Failed Pressure Test
Leaking Stem Seals
This can lead to loss of barriers and with no access to remove the Tree Cap this can mean intervention downtime and well shut in.
Example of an Annulus Gate Valve Isolation Using Mac-Pac
KCI were requested by a major Oil and Gas operator in the UK to provide an isolation on a leaking Annulus Gate Valve in support of installing a VR Plug in the wellhead to replace both Annulus Valves. Mac-Pac is ideal for this application as it acts both as a sealant and lubricant.
How do Gate Valve Isolations work?
Deploy Mac-Pac to isolate the gate valve to allow intervention rig up
Connect KCI Deployment tooling to the Model ‘D’ Fitting on the Inner Annulus valve
Inject Mac-Pac Sealant through the Model ‘D’ Fitting displacing Grease up to a maximum working pressure of 5000psi
Function the Inner Annulus Valve to the closed position with the cavity full of Mac-Pac. Confirm zero PBU
Remove Outer Annulus Valve and fit Telescopic VR Plug Installation Lubricator. Open Inner Annulus Valve and install VR Plug and test
Replace Inner Annulus Valve and test. Remove VR Plug. Fit Outer Annulus Valve
Carry out functional checks & return to well production
Results and Benefits of Gate Valve Isolations
The pressure above the Annulus Gate Valve is now showing 0psi & production re-started on this well
The Onshore Trial & subsequent Offshore Operation went as planned
KCI executed a safe, effective & efficient Isolation of the Annulus Gate Valve
This value adding, rigless Isolation Operation saved the Well owner from a potentially time-consuming and costly Freeze operation or Barrier Dispensation Process

Mac-Pac FAQs
Click each question below to reveal the answer:
- How long does Mac-Pac last for?
The base material of Mac-Pac has a 25 year life span.
- How long will a Mac-Pac isolation stay in the gate valve?
Mac-Pac will stay within the Valve Cavity for a very long time compared to tree Grease. We don’t have a definitive time limit but some of the isolations in place are several years old.
- How does Mac-Pac last longer than Grease?
As Mac-Pac is a very high viscosity product, it does not get sucked out of the valve easily when opening under differential pressure.
- Does Mac-Pac block Injection Fittings, Ports or Export Filters?
No. There are no rubber lumps or particles in Mac-Pac. It is a smooth solids-free product so it flows through Injection Fittings and Check Valves into Gate Valves and Wellheads without blocking the path like other sealants can.
- Does Mac-Pac solidify inside the valve?
No. Mac-Pac stays in the same high viscosity fluid state from -50°C to +250°C without getting thicker or thinner, unlike standard tree Grease.
- Is Mac-Pac only a sealant?
No. Mac-Pac is a Sealant and Lubricant. Mac-Pac will isolate and seal off the leak path while lubricating the internal metal to metal components on every valve movement.
- How does Mac-Pac prevent internal corrosion of valves?
Mac-Pac fills all available space within the valve pushing out any tree Grease, water or corrosive fluids which can cause internal corrosion.
- Does Mac-Pac prevent internal erosion in Gate Valves?
Yes. Mac-Pac prevents Well debris (salt, silt, sand, aggregates etc.) entering the valve cavity which can lead to erosion and wear.
- How is Mac-Pac deployed into Gate Valves?
Mac-Pac is deployed with a standard KCI 5k Deployment Tool and Equipment.
- Can Mac-Pac be deployed through the original Valve Lubricant Fitting?
Yes. Mac-Pac is deployed into the Gate Valve via the standard Grease Injection Fitting.
- Does Mac-Pac add a high operating torque to valves after deployment?
Valves filled with Mac-Pac still operate as normal after deployment. A slight increase in torque can be witnessed on manual valves due to Mac-Pac’s high viscosity but it will not cause any issues operating the valve. Hydraulic Valves will also operate as normal.
- Is a Mac-Pac isolation repeatable?
Yes on leaking Stem Seals. Once Mac-Pac is deployed into the Valve Stem Seal area it remains in a soft state (does not cure) so it is always isolating any leak path. Gate Valve Isolations should be considered a “one off” isolation. Mac-Pac is deployed into the Valve Cavity under pressure and when the Valve is totally full pressure should be kept on to fully energise the Mac-Pac. Keeping the Mac-Pac under pressure ensure the nest result possible.
