Isolation Gel - Fluid Piston (IG-FP)

Oil and gas wells' integrity is imperative for operational success and environmental responsibility. Among the many challenges faced in the industry, leaks in the control lines of Downhole Safety Valves (DHSV) present a significant threat to well integrity. When these leaks occur, wells are often shut down until major interventions can be carried out, resulting in lost production and increased environmental impact due to rig emissions.

Traditionally, solutions for DHSV control line leaks have involved time–consuming rig–intensive procedures, such as installing storm chokes, velocity valves, or rig workovers, which contribute to the industry's carbon footprint. Our in-house R&D facilities at our Aberdeen base have enabled us to make advancements in rigless technologies and can offer alternatives that not only address integrity issues but also contribute to decarbonisation efforts within the industry.

One innovative solution gaining traction is the use of non–pressure–activated sealants, specifically our non-pressure-activated Isolation Gel fluid Piston (IG-FP). Unlike traditional pressure-activated sealants, IG-FP provides a reliable and environmentally friendly method to restore control line integrity without rig interventions.

The application process of IG-FP is relatively simple and efficient. The gel contains micro-sealing elements and is injected into the control line from the surface. As it travels down the line, it effectively plugs leaks and fills voids, ensuring a secure seal. The gel remains flexible, allowing it to adapt to the dynamic conditions of the DHSV operation.

What sets IG-FP apart from other solutions is its versatility and effectiveness. It can be deployed in various viscosities and is compatible with different hydraulic fluids, making it suitable for multiple well conditions. Its success rate is also high, with a 100 % track record in restoring control line integrity.

Additionally, eliminating the need for rig interventions significantly reduces carbon emissions associated with traditional well interventions. This aligns with the industry's broader goal of decarbonisation and sustainability.

IG-FP also offers financial savings by deferring costly rig workovers and minimises production downtime. It ensures the prompt return of wells to operation, maximising production and resources.

Adopting innovative rigless solutions such as IG-FP represents a significant step forward in advancing well integrity practices while mitigating environmental impact. As KCI prioritises sustainability, technologies that offer effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions will continue to play a crucial role in shaping our industry's future.
